About Me

If I had to describe myself in one word, it would be supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. Just kidding. I was homeschooled K-12 and graduated from Liberty University in the spring of 2015 with a major in electrical engineering and minor in computer science. I was born in South Carolina, spent my younger years in Kentucky, teenage years in northern Indiana, and college years in Lynchburg Virginia. I’m an entrepreneur and have started a number of small businesses over the years. Most have been spectacular failures, but as they say, “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.”

My most notable small business is FoxyTronics, which I started as a junior in college. FoxyTronics is a small hobby electronics company that provides electronics and robotics components and kits to students and hobbyists. Over the years I developed a passion for science and technology, which is something I hope to share with others through my small business.

Another recent venture is ShopWise, a price tracking and deals website. The deals section of the website is lacking at the moment, but the price tracking functionality works really well for a number of major retailers.

If you want to get in touch with me, feel free to email me at

This is the “Hire Me” tab where his humor and fun-loving spirit shine through. Our family enjoyed the funny quotes he created when he first wrote the blog.
This page would have been reworked to reflect companies he worked for, but this was his funny first draft written in October, 2015. Nathan did some freelance programming for a company during the months he traveled, October 2015- March 2016.

Hire Me

I’m self-motivated and an analytical problem solver. I have a strong interest in electronics design and manufacturing, as well as in robotics and automation. I also enjoy software development and have experience with various languages and platforms. I have a degree in electrical engineering, with a minor in computer science. I love programming so much I almost majored in software engineering, but chose electrical engineering when people told me it was harder. I enjoy being challenged and find great fulfillment in the work I do. I’ve started and operated several small businesses over the years, including a hobby electronics retail company. You can read my full resume here.

I’m currently available to work part-time and would love to have the opportunity to help you or your company. I’m confident I can solve whatever challenges you send my direction to your satisfaction. Just check out some of the reviews below and I’m sure you will be totally convinced of this.

“Nathan is very dedicated and has done an incredible job for us. We hope to have the opportunity to work with him again in the future, because, you know, he’s pretty awesome.” – Gary House

“Two thumbs up!” – Laura House

“Nathan is pretty much the best engineer I’ve ever known. I can’t imagine not having him around to fix all of our problems.” – Megan House

“Nathan es impresionante! Se merece un montón de dinero y respeto! Contratarlo y darle bolsas de oro!” – Ryan House

“Hire me, and all your wildest dreams will come true! Okay, maybe that’s going a little too far. But seriously, just hire me already. You won’t regret it!” – Nathan House

“Believe it or not, ‘Nathan’ actually means ‘the one who will solve all your problems and greatly increase the amount of awesome in your life’ in Hebrew.” – Esuoh Nahtan “I don’t know how to put this, but I’m kind of a big deal. People know me. I’m very important.” – Nathan D. House

As I’m sure you’re aware, recent scientific studies have proven 97% of online testimonials are 100% accurate nearly 86% of the time*. This means you can hire me with absolute confidence given all of the incredibly positive reviews above! This logic is irrefutable, so you may now feel secure in your decision to hire me. * Admittedly, some studies have indicated 72% of statistics are made up on the spot.

ABOUT ME

CURRENTLY TRAVELING AND UNABLE TO HOST — I’ll start hosting as soon as I settle down somewhere 🙂

I recently graduated from college with a degree in electrical engineering and minor in computer science. I was born in South Carolina, spent my younger years in Kentucky, teenage years in northern Indiana, and college years in central Virginia.

I’m an entrepreneur and have started a number of small businesses over the years. Most have been spectacular failures, but as they say, “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.” I love traveling and meeting new people. My favorite place to be is on a beach at the ocean. I love sunshine!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

After graduating from college. I decided to shut down my hobby electronics retail business so I could travel. I started by setting off on a cross-country trip, driving from Virginia Beach, VA, to Los Angeles, CA (literally coast-to-coast!) with many stops along the way (including visiting the Grand Canyon). Once I arrived in California, I did some sightseeing (including Yosemite National Park) and spent quality time at some of the many great beaches for a few weeks.

I then headed off to Europe, flying from LAX to London. I only spent two days in the U.K. (mostly holed up in my hotel trying, and failing, to sleep) before heading to Montpellier France, where I was going to attend a three month intensive language course but then decided to postpone after arriving. Now I’m in Spain and am about to take a Spanish language course for a month, after which I’ll probably have to leave the Schengen area since I don’t have a long-stay visa (I’ll probably head back to the U.K., but it’s up in the air right now).

I’m new to couchsurfing, but you’re welcome to check out my LinkedIn profile or friend me on facebook!

Interests

Traveling, sightseeing, exercising & yoga, science, technology, reading, engineering, mathematics, watching movies/TV (trying to cut down), philosophy, aviation, the list goes on.. Oh, and having fun! My motto is “work hard, play hard!”

Music, Movies, and Books

Music
—————–
I listen to a LOT of music. I have tinnitus, so music is not only soothing to my soul, but also serves as background noise to drown out the incessant ringing in my ears.

Coldplay
Imagine Dragons
Bon Iver
Birdy
Christina Perri
Ellie Goulding
A Fine Frenzy
Florence + The Machine
Sia
Katy Perry (some of her songs, but definitely not all..)
Taylor Swift (later albums, not so much the earlier country ones)
Sara Bareilles
Skylar Grey
KT Tunstall
London Grammar
Of Monsters And Men
Howie Day
Oldies (70-80’s) songs and bands, such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Queen, The Eagles, Simon & Garfunkel, Elton John, Creedence Clearwater Revival, John Lennon, Jefferson Airplane, etc. (basically anything EXCEPT disco! Never disco!)
Movie soundtracks (especially Hans Zimmer ones!)
… Basically anything other than disco and country.

Movies
—————–
Like most people, I’ve wasted a fairly significant portion of my life watching movies and TV. Here are some of the good movies I’ve seen:

Into the Wild
The Notebook (kidding, lol!)
The Lord of The Rings (all three)
Star Wars (the old/good ones)
Back To The Future
Fight Club
Gladiator
The Patriot
Office Space
Guardians of the Galaxy
Letters from Iwo Jima
The Right Stuff
Batman Begins & The Dark Knight (third one is lame)
The Shawshank Redemption

The Matrix (first one)
Saving Private Ryan
Star Trek (some of the old ones, plus the 2009 one)
Good Will Hunting
12 Angry Men

Oblivion
Catch Me If You Can
Amélie
Moon
The Bourne Identity/Supremacy/Ultimatum
Serenity

Heat
Taken
Million Dollar Baby
Garden State
Zoolander
Kingdom of Heaven
Minority Report
Rain Man
Rambo
Lord of War
The Departed
Blade Runner
Mission Impossible movies (except the second one)

Books
—————–
I used to be a voracious reader, then college happened. I’m now trying to get back to reading a few books a month. I also sometimes listen to audiobooks when reading is impractical, such as when driving.

The Lord of The Rings
The Martian
Gone Girl
A Song of Ice and Fire (i.e. Game of Thrones)
The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo series
Nineteen Eighty Four
Catch Me If You Can
The Everything Store: Jeff Bezos and the Age of Amazon
Steve Jobs
The Catcher in the Rye
Watership Down
Harry Potter (entire series)
The Bourne Identity
The Chronicles of Narnia
Looking For Alaska
The Fault in Our Stars
Journey to the Center of the Earth
Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea
The hunger games (first book)
… To be continued.. I’ve read so many, it’s hard to think of my favorites off the top of my head.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Why stop at one?

– I didn’t watch any movies or TV in 2011 (started as a 21-day personal challenge, which I just kept extending!).

– I started and operated a hobby electronics retail company for three years while in college.

– I’ve driven from coast-to-coast in the U.S.

– I’ve visited the Grand Canyon and Yosemite National Park.

– I’ve traveled in France and Spain.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I’m a critical thinker, intelligent, and enjoy engaging in stimulating conversations about pretty much anything. I love learning about people and hearing their stories. I’m very organized and tidy and will leave the couch/bed/whatever as clean or cleaner than when I found it! I’m very tech-savvy and can assist with any kind of technology problems. I can cook pretty decent breakfast food.

Countries I’ve Visited

Canada, England, France, Mexico, Spain

Countries I’ve Lived In

  • Confirmed Stay – Would Host Nathan Again

Nathan is on quest for adventure and knowledge, not necessarily in that order. He has set an ambitious goal of spending a year travel in Europe. Having no previous history of international travel, he is wisely using his domestic couchsurfing experiences to broaden his knowledge base. I was more than happy to share my decades of international travel stories of memorable triumphs and occasional stupidity to provide some substance to his inquisitive mind…all done in a relaxing evening at my favorite local pub…thanks again for the beer and spirited discussion! Consider Nathan Highly recommended as a couchsurfer and a good guy!

References for CouchSurfing

When he was setting up his profile, he asked a few of us to do a reference. After I did one, he decided it shouldn’t be all family, so asked a couple of friends and a cousin.

Laura House

Lynchburg, VA, USA

  • Positive

I’ve known Nathan longer than anyone who could leave a comment here, since I’m his mom 🙂 That being said, I can vouch for his integrity, kindness, and wit. He is selfless, always willing to lend a helping hand. As both an engineer and entrepreneur, he has a love for learning, is a creative problem-solver, and has always been giving of his time and abilities to those around him. He is genuinely interested in other people, easy-going and fun to be with.

Denver, CO, USA

  • Positive

Nathan and I studied engineering together and lived in the same dorm. He is a good mix of intelligent and friendly. He would definitely make for a great guest.

Oceanside, CA, United States

  • Positive

Nathan is about to embark on his biggest travel adventure and has been a sponge for knowledge on how to get around Europe and beyond. He is certain to bring his enthusiasm for travel into any willing host’s home and share the good vibe. Just a brief visit in Oceanside on his way to enjoy more San Diego couches. Welcome him into your home and contribute to the building of a new backpacker…it takes a village!

Los Angeles, CA, USA

  • Positive

Nathan has an uncommon mix of intelligence and down-to-earth friendliness. You’ll instantly feel at ease around him, but you’re also guaranteed to have interesting conversations about anything from movies & books to technology or philosophy, and will definitely learn something from him. He’s been very polite and courteous when staying with me, and he’s graciously hosted me in the past as well. I can confidently recommend Nathan as a houseguest, and I hope you have the pleasure of meeting him.

__________________________________________________________

We visited our family in Indiana, Thanksgiving of 2013. On the long drive back to Virginia, Nathan dreamed up a new business, a price watching site for consumers. He asked our opinion of his idea for a name, and bought the URL in the car–Price Wombat. He later re-named it ShopWise. Although he hadn’t finished it yet, it was functional.

ShopWise

ShopWise (https://www.shopwise.io) (previously PriceWombat) is a price tracking, shopping comparison, and deals website. I conceived the idea on Black Friday 2014 when I was looking at deals on Amazon. Amazon always has a few deals that are outrageously good, but the catch is that they don’t tell you what time the deals go live, and they always sell out within minutes.

As I perused the amazing deals, I realized in order to be one of the lucky few to make a score, I would have to sit in front of my computer all day refreshing the page. I didn’t have time for that! I actually didn’t have any money to buy anything, but it bothered me on principal that I wouldn’t have an opportunity.

I started thinking about writing some kind of script (computer program) that would check the prices of deals every few seconds and alert me somehow when the deals went live. I thought about it for a few days and then realized this would actually be a great tool to have all the time, not just on Black Friday. I decided to develop a service that would check product prices on retailers’ websites, send alerts out to anyone watching a product whose price had dropped, and store the prices in a database so people could see how the prices have changed over time. Meet ShopWise.

The website still needs a lot of work and development has been hampered due to a lack of time, but it works really well on a number of major retailers, including Amazon, Walmart, and Best Buy.
